Jace Houston scrambles out of the pocket in Graves’ first game of the 2025 season against the Cardinals.
The 33rd Battle of the Birds kicked off the 2025 high school football season on Friday night with a contest between the Mayfield Cardinals and Graves County Eagles. Eagles and Cardinals fans alike all wore the color gold to signify their support for Dakari Saxton, a Mayfield freshman battling through Stage IV bone cancer. Saxton was a captain for the Cardinals, and was front and center when his team came out of the tunnel. The Cardinals won in an overwhelming sense, capturing the game 40-7.
It was unknown before the game if Mayfield’s Gray Robbins was going to suit up. Robbins made an appearance on the second drive of the game and played the rest of the way through, looking sharp to start his junior campaign.
