Though pansies were grown in Greece more than 2,000 years ago, Greek gardeners would not recognize them today. The small, pure white viola they grew is much smaller. Now, blooms are multi-colored, and there are nearly 500 species worldwide from which to choose.

Pansies are cheerful, colorful flowers whose charming faces are among the earliest to welcome spring.

Though pansies were grown in Greece more than 2,000 years ago, Greek gardeners would not recognize them today. The small, pure white viola they grew is much smaller. Now, blooms are multi-colored, and there are nearly 500 species worldwide from which to choose. Pansies (Viola x wittrockiana) are annuals, except for three perennial natives.
