Fall is known for its intense colors and as the ideal time to plant. Ideally, a design is drawn, plants are purchased, and then they are positioned according to the design. Why does it not look as imagined? The problem is that color was not considered. According to Pantone, the company that announces The Color of the Year, color is the most important element in the garden, as it sets the tone.
The number of colors depends on the size of the garden. In a small garden, three to five colors grouped together are as dramatic in a small garden as five to seven in a larger one. We react to each color differently. Red is dramatic and best limited to an accent. Blue calms, creates depth and is a transition color, and intense yellows work well in shade, and they work as well with warm colors as cool colors. Green is calming but cancels color when intermixed with blue.
