As we prepare for winter weather, there is more to get ready for than just snow and cold. Our region can sometimes experience a wide range of weather during the cooler months of the year — everything from some “sneaky†winter hazards to severe storms.
One of the sneakiest things to watch out for this time of year is black ice. It occurs when a thin layer of ice forms on pavement or sidewalks, and it can be difficult to detect because it often looks as though the surface is just wet. Look out for a shiny glaze as a good indicator that ice is present. Always be aware of the potential for black ice if temperatures are below freezing, possibly saving you from a nasty fall. When walking in icy conditions, remember to “walk like a penguin†with short, shuffling steps.
