In less than a month, Paducah native Kiael Waldon will get the opportunity of a lifetime as he gets a chance to qualify for the United States Olympic Boxing Team at this year’s U.S. Olympic trials.
Kelvin Sparrow (left), who started coaching Kiael Waldon just a few months ago, has been around the sport his entire life. He said he’s rarely seen someone make the strides Waldon has in a short amount of time.
Kiael Waldon didn’t start boxing until he was 20 years old. Now he’s 22, and he has 21 fights under his belt. Twenty of those would end up being wins, with his lone loss being avenged just a few weeks later.
“I don’t know what to think about it sometimes,†Kiael Waldon said. “It sounds like a lie almost, but I used to write 2024 Olympics on a piece of paper every day at the gym. If I told people that, they would think I am crazy.â€
Kiael Waldon, who grew up playing baseball and football at McCracken County High School, began boxing after a chance encounter with friends back in Paducah that led to a sparring session.
