Four years after a lawsuit challenged Paducah’s residency requirement for firefighters, the Kentucky Supreme Court voted to uphold the city’s ordinance.

In 2021, former Paducah Fire Captain and president of the firefighters’ union, Nathan Torian, sued the city of Paducah after it implemented a residency policy requiring firefighters to live within a 45-minute drive of the city. Torian challenged the policy, saying it violated Kentucky statute KRS 311.027a, which banned residency requirements for “publicly funded emergency medical service first response providers.†In a Dec. 18 ruling, the Kentucky Supreme Court upheld Paducah’s ordinance.
