LOUISVILLE — While the winter holidays are typically seen as a joyful time, doctors say they can also add stress, leading to more heart attacks and cardiac deaths than any other time of the year.

More people die from heart attacks during the last week of December than at any other time of the year, according to the American Heart Association. Additionally, in the U.S., more cardiac deaths occur on Dec. 25 than on any other day of the year, followed by Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. Cardiologist for Norton Healthcare, Dr. Matthew Thomas, said it is important to take care of oneself, especially during the holidays.
