I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like a good Christmas movie, be it a Hallmark story or “Die Hard.†I know few who do not enjoy at least some Christmas songs, which are not the same thing at all as Christmas hymns. Most of us, certainly not all, have wonderful memories as children. Most families go through at least a few years of a sweet spot in life where almost everything comes together just right. Those years are a minority, and sentimentality takes over as we rest on memory or hope rather than reality. That’s probably why we like those movies so much.

I do not know anyone with responsibilities that does not have a moment when we hear a voice in our head suggesting, “We’re not doing this right.†We shove that thought aside and cave to the expectations of family, tradition, marketing, and fear. We may have turned Christmas into the most peer-pressure packed event of the year, and no one is immune.
