Kentucky wildlife managers don’t want late season hunters to stop deer pursuits because of one CWD finding, but they would appreciate samples to check animals taken in final season weeks.

With Kentucky’s deer hunting for the year winding down, the state’s first confirmed case of chronic wasting disease won’t bring any changes in regulations for the remnants of the 2023-24 seasons.

Double-tested findings of CWD in a 2½-year-old buck taken in southeastern Ballard County back on Nov. 11, the opening day of the modern firearms deer season, triggered intensified precautions to monitor for and slow the spread of the disease in the surrounding area. However, Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources managers say changes in hunting rules won’t come until the 2024-25 hunting year.
