Impatiens have become a new favorite to add to wherever I can find a spot in the yard. They have been popular with gardeners since the brightly colored flowers were introduced from the Middle East over 500 years ago. However, they have had disease problems.

Impatiens has been named the Plant of the Year 2026 by the National Garden Bureau. Impatiens are known for their bright flowers in shady areas, now with new types, including New Guineas that tolerate partial sun, as well as “SunPatiens Series†that grow in full sun. They thrive in beds, containers, hanging baskets and trailing and increase filling in between other plants.
