Fall provides us and perennials with the perfect temperature to divide and replant them. Soil is averaging 60 degrees, a temperature that gives the divisions time to settle in and send out new roots before the first freeze. By fall planting bulbs and perennials, they have a head start on spring to mid-summer bloomers. Weather-wise, it is also a more comfortable time for us to work in the garden now than in early spring.
Dividing plants gives them more root space, re-energizes their root systems and moves them to a more suitable location if needed, and you can share divisions with friends. Should you lose your plants, you know where they can be replaced.
