Like most cinematic history, the horror genre has always iterated upon itself. Tropes and styles are passed down through each era of filmmaking, taking new forms that deviate from the established norm. That shapeshifting process is especially pertinent to director Kane Parsons’ debut feature “Backrooms,†adapted from the 20-year-old’s viral web series about an eerie dimension of endless interconnected hallways and stark rooms that only twist and bend the deeper you go. Parsons doesn’t appear to be riffing on one key influence, but rather what has trickled down to him through a diffuse media landscape.
Steven Spielberg would consciously emulate predecessors like Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford, but like most people born after 2000 with unlimited exposure online, Parsons seems to be wired differently. He’s capturing the elemental “vibes†that unnerve the human psyche at its most overloaded.
